Brandywine Workshop and Archives presents On the Table: Still Lifes Now
Date: On view now through May 1, 2026
A group exhibition that reexamines the still life as a living, evolving genre that reflects contemporary questions of identity, labor, consumption, memory, and power. On view now through May 1, 2026, in the Printed Image Gallery, the exhibition brings together works by artists who have created prints at BWA across multiple generations, highlighting the continued relevance of still life imagery in contemporary art.
The still life has long been associated with tradition and domesticity and is often perceived as static or purely decorative. On the Table: Still Lifes Now challenges that perception, positioning the genre as a site of experimentation, critique, and reinvention. Through printmaking, artists transform everyday objects into carriers of cultural meaning, revealing how still lifes can speak to social histories, personal narratives, and shifting political realities.
The exhibition includes works by internationally recognized artists such as Barkley Hendricks, the celebrated American portrait painter; Robert Blackburn, the pioneering American printmaker and master printer; Rick Bartow, the multidisciplinary artist known for his expressive figuration; Mary Lovelace O’Neal, a leading Bay Area painter and printmaker; and Jamaican painter and printmaker Keith Morrison, underscoring Brandywine Workshop and Archives’ longstanding role as a vital site of artistic production within the printmaking field.
